I was looking for a book on Alexander McQueen when I bumped into this biography. The cover caught my attention due to the lack of models walking down the catwalk, the designer sketching, pinning or cutting fabric, or things like these as I would expect from an ordinary monograph.
You can't see it here, but on the top we can read "The most comprehensive McQueen biography thus far" - THE ECONOMIST. Needless to say I had high expectations.
The foreword was written by Daphne Guinness, "a designer, editor, model, muse, and stylist".
The next preface is a short synopsis about what kind of person he was and about changes he introduced in fashion.
The introduction tells a lot of information about his life, such as biographical details, who influenced him the most, and his passions, which make the reader understand his work better.
As I said, this book is a biography, and it tells you not only about his career, but also focuses on the life before success. May seem absurd, but some biographies don't. It doesn't even picture the designer as a god, but as a human, because it tells the reader the mistakes he made, and difficulties he had to face. The author pays a lot of attention to his sexual orientation, which may seem weird at the beginning, but soon you will understand why. You can find the description of every fashion show of his including name, year, Alexander's quotes and inspiration, pieces of his interviews, press opinions, information about hairdos and makeup, and an explanation about the techniques, fabrics, cuts, colours, and models he chose. Here and there you can read pages written by people who tells how working with McQueen was like, how was he like, or their thoughts about a particular collection.
The graphic is clean, and there are images only where it's needed.These images shows the designer, people close to him, his inspirations, his creations, and each of them have a detailed caption. "Alexander McQueen s/s 1997" and that's it. No, forget about it.
Judith Watt, the authour, is Head of Fashion History at Central Saint Martins, and she made me learn loads of new fashion-related words, (even if it's written in English, I found it quite easy to read) and wrote a great biography being impartial.
This is the kind of fashion book I would like to find in bookstores because there are many pages to read, it's absorbing, fascinating, tidy (it has only six, well- written chapters), cheap, and makes you understand that a designer doesn't wake up in the morning like "Oh, I want to sketch this", but he translates his life into his creations.

Stavo cercando un libro su Alexander McQueen quando mi sono imbattuta in questa biografia. La copertina ha attirato la mia attenzione data la mancanza di modelle che camminavano lungo la passerella, lo stilista che disegnava, spillava o tagliava il tessuto o cose del genere che mi sarei aspettata da una normale monografia. Non riuscite a vederlo qui, ma in alto si legge "La biografia più completa su McQueen finora" - THE ECONOMIST. Inutile dire che avessi delle alte aspettative.
La prefazione è stata scritta da Daphne Guinness, "una designer, direttrice, modella musa e stylist".
La prefazione successiva è un breve riassunto su che tipo di persona fosse e sui cambiamenti che ha introdotto nella moda.
L'introduzione dà molte informazioni sulla sua vita, come dettagli biografici, chi l'abbia influenzato di più e le sue passioni, che fanno capire meglio il suo lavoro al lettore.
Come ho detto, questo libro è una biografia e racconta non solo della sua carriera, ma si concentra anche sulla vita prima del successo. Potrebbe sembrare assurdo, ma alcune biografie non lo fanno. Non dipinge neanche il designer come un dio, ma come una persona che ha commesso errori e dovuto affrontare difficoltà. L'autore pone l'accento sul suo orientamento sessuale, che potrebbe sembrare strano all'inizio, ma presto capirete perché. Potete trovare la descrizione di ogni sua sfilata, compresi nome, anno, citazioni e ispirazioni di Alexander, frammenti delle sue interviste, opinioni della stampa, informazioni su acconciature e trucco e la spiegazione delle tecniche, dei tessuti, tagli, colori e modelle che ha scelto. Qua e là potete leggere pagine scritte da persone che raccontano come fosse lavorare con McQueen, che persona fosse o i loro pareri su una certa collezione.
La grafica è pulita e ci sono immagini solo dove serve. Queste immagini mostrano lo stilista, le persone a lui care, le sue ispirazioni, le sue creazioni e ognuna di loro ha una didascalia dettagliata. "Alexander McQueen S/S 1997" e basta. No, scordatevelo.
Judith Watt, l'autrice, insegna storia della moda alla Central Saint Martins, mi ha fatto imparare tantissimi nuovi termini legati alla moda (anche se è scritto in inglese, l'ho trovato abbastanza facile da leggere) e ha scritto una biografia grandiosa essendo imparziale.
Questo è il tipo di libro di moda che vorrei trovare nelle librerie perché ci sono molte pagine da leggere, è appassionante, affascinante, ordinato (ha solo sei capitoli ben scritti), economico e ti fa capire che uno stilista non si sveglia la mattina pensando "Oh, voglio disegnare questo", ma trasferisce la sua vita nelle sue creazioni.

This is the first monograph on Boris Bidjan Saberi. Obviously the first thing I noticed was the cover. It is rough to the touch in a pleasant way and the title is impressed on the bottom. Maybe because touch is fundamental to fully appreciate Boris' clothes? I don't know.
The photograph on the front is a detail of one of his garments, and the same lace we can see on top is also a book mark in this case. The one on the back shows the upper part of one pair of his famous trousers.
The first part of the book features six bilingual essays written in Italian and English. Each of them is quite short and tells the reader about the designer's roots, inspiration, and techniques.
The last part contains some pictures of Saberi's inspiration, collections, backstage, and here and there we can find some quotes and songs lyrics.
The first essay was written by Fabriano Fabbri, the author, the best professor I've ever had and Saberi's friend. I read this book many times for his exam, and I would advise you to consider this essay as the main one by reading it and looking at the pictures of the collections mentioned at the same time. This really makes you understand BBS brilliant ideas.
As a Valentino, Armani, YSL, Chanel, Dior, etc. lover, I used to define this kind of style "weird", but it's my favourite fashion monograph so far, and now that kind of fashion doesn't seem so special if compared to this.
There are only a few pages to read, but they are enough to make you step into Saberi's philosophy. The authors of the essays do not describe him as if he was God and they do not limit themselves to say how talented he is either. They analyze his creations, they are curious to know what he will create in the future, and they seem really fascinated by his works. This is not one of those boring monographs that tells you anything about the fashion designer's life ignoring what he really does.
The photographs are intense and the essential graphic makes them pop. No frills, just beautiful pictures.
"Boris Bidjan Saberi 11" is quite pricy, but it worths every single penny.

Questa è la prima monografia su Boris Bidjan Saberi. Ovviamente la prima cosa che ho notato è stata la copertina. È ruvida al tatto in modo piacevole e il titolo è impresso in basso. Forse perché il tatto è fondamentale per apprezzare al massimo gli abiti di Boris? Non lo so.
La fotografia sul davanti è un dettaglio di uno dei suoi capi e lo stesso laccio che vediamo in alto è anche un segnalibro in questo caso. Quella sul dietro mostra la parte superiore di un paio dei suoi famosi pantaloni.
La prima parte del libro contiene sei saggi bilingue scritti in italiano e in inglese. Ognuno di essi è abbastanza breve e racconta al lettore delle origini, dell'ispirazione e delle tecniche dello stilista.
L'ultima parte contiene alcune foto dell'ispirazione, delle collezioni, del backstage di Saberi e qua e là possiamo trovare alcune citazioni e testi di canzoni.
Il primo saggio è stato scritto da Fabriano Fabbri, l'autore, il docente migliore che abbia mai avuto e un amico di Saberi. Ho letto questo libro molte volte per il suo esame e vi consiglierei di considerare il suo saggio quello principale leggendolo e guardando le immagini delle collezioni citate contemporaneamente. Questo fa davvero capire le idee brillanti di BBS.
Da amate di Valentino, Armani, YSL, Chanel, Dior, ecc., definivo questo stile "strano", ma è la mia monografia di moda preferita finora e adesso quel tipo di moda non sembra poi così speciale se paragonata a questa. Ci sono solo poche pagine da leggere, ma sono abbastanza per farvi entrare nella filosofia di Saberi. Gli autori dei saggi non lo descrivono come se fosse Dio e non si limitano nemmeno a dire quanto sia bravo. Analizzano le sue creazioni, sono curiosi di sapere cosa creerà in futuro e sembrano davvero affascinati dai suoi lavori. Questa non è una di quelle monografie noiose che ti dicono tutto sulla vita dello stilista ignorando quello che fa veramente.
Le fotografia sono intense e la grafica essenziale le mette in risalto. Niente fronzoli, solo bellissime foto.
"Boris Bidjan Saberi 11" è abbastanza costoso, ma vale ogni singolo centesimo.

As the title says, this is a directory. You won't find any useless gossip about fashion designers or things like that.
This book is divided in three parts. The first one is about fashion history from 1850s to present. Although it is really short, it's a well-made summary.
The second part is the main one. It is a guide with more than 100 of the best fashion designers and fashion houses. Every fashion house or fashion designer is introduced to the reader with a one-page biography and the following pages are dedicated to the most original, important and representative collections.
The last part is about fabric samples. A brief description tell us what each fashion house is famous for and there are six little fabric samples.
I think you should buy it because it is schematic enough to give you a basic knowledge of fashion in this historical period and to motivate you to learn more about it. It is also really cheap although it's full of images.

Come dice il titolo, questo è un elenco. Non troverete nessun pettegolezzo inutile sugli stilisti o cose del genere.
Questo libro è diviso in tre parti. La prima è sulla storia della moda dagli anni Cinquanta dell'Ottocento a oggi. Benché sia molto breve, è un riassunto benfatto.
La seconda parte è quella principale. È una guida con più di 100 dei migliori stilisti e case di moda. Ogni casa di moda o stilista è presentato al lettore con una biografia di una pagina e le pagine seguenti sono dedicate alle collezioni più originali, importanti e rappresentative.
L'ultima parte è sul campionario tessuti. Una breve descrizione ci dice per quale motivo ogni casa di moda è celebre e ci sono sei piccoli campioni di tessuto.
Credo che dovreste comprarlo perché è abbastanza schematico da dare una conoscenza basilare della moda in questo periodo storico e da motivare a volerne sapere di più. È anche molto economico nonostante sia pieno di immagini.
