My experience at Central Saint Martins

Last week I attended the Introduction to Fashion Journalism short course at Central Saint Martins, my dream school.
In the beginning, I was scared. It was my first time travelling alone, and, most of all, to a city I'd never been to. Since I'm not used to travelling, I had mixed feelings about this, but I was determined to make a dream come true no matter what.
I had no internet access for a few days, so I got lost many times, but I asked directions to some nice people, and reached my destination. In the evening, I talked to my loved ones on the phone, which was weird. I don't like phone calls, but they made me feel a little closer to important people in my life. I loved hearing their voices after a long day.
This course exceeded expectations. It was taught by Harriet Worsley, who made me love every second of our lectures. She is kind, down-to-earth, funny, and shared with us loads of information about her career.
She wanted us to speak our minds, and talk about our experiences. This made everything more interactive, and interesting. I really enjoyed this kind of exchange. It allowed us to learn something from her, and viceversa.
There were 14 people in our class coming from all around the world, and each of us had different backgrounds. Worsley made us work in groups or in pairs. This was a nice way to discuss about ideas, learn together, and know each other better. She also assigned individual tasks, and, as we reported fashion shows, wrote features, news, and did interviews, I noticed my writing was improving quickly.
This was one of the most challenging experiences I made so far. I grew as a person, and I feel inspired, and enriched.
I would advise this short course to anyone who loves writing about fashion.
Have you ever been to London? If so, did you like it?

80s 90s Facing Beauties

From 11th October to 8th December Museum of the City of Rimini hosted the "80s 90s Facing Beauties" fashion exhibit. This was the result of the collaboration between some students of the fashion course I attend, and the Research Archive Mazzini. The archive lent 179 pieces, created in 1980s and 1990s by Japanese and Italian designers (such as Rei Kawakubo, Issey Mijake, Yohji Yamamoto, Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace and Moschino) of its more than 250000-piece clothes and accessories collection. The students, led by the professor Simona Segre Reinach, did some research, selected and catalogued these pieces with the help of Attilio Mazzini and Carla Marangoni. This process took a whole year.
When the visitors stepped into the location, they could see a S/S 1995 green pleated polyester dress, worn on the catwalk by Tyra Banks, by Issey Miyake, the first Japanese designer to work in Paris in 1966.

Turning right, you could see a mannequin by Bonaveri, a famous brand of mannequins, with a little chain in front of it (which you can't see in this picture). The idea was making fashion accessible and this not.
-

Turning right again, you could notare that the location was very simple, all white except for the black numbers of the rooms painted beside every entrance. There were also some graphic works hanging from the ceiling created by a student.

In every room, there were profiles for every garment shown, and a brief description of the theme on the wall.
-

In the first room there were clothes by Japanese designers hung against the wall both on the right and on the left, characterized by geometrical shapes, pleats, metallic and acid colours, and, of course, by black. In the middle there were six Armani suits in a row, easily recognizable by shoulder pads, oriental details, sophisticated colours and fabrics.
-

The next one was organized in the same way, but this time Japanese earthy-toned, ripped and destructured creations were laid on a block in the middle, while the Italian ones, sexy evening mostly dark-coloured garments on the right and body-hugging coloured daytime pieces on the left, were hanging on the walls.
-

The black wall in the third room melt with the Japanese dresses, and the white one on the left makes Italian bright-coloured printed pieces pop. The students we met told us the third room's main purpose wasn't to enhance the garments shown, in fact on both of the sides clothes were leant over the walls. The most important thing was highlighting the abyssal difference between the colours used by these two groups of designers.
-

You could admire some men's clothing in just one room. There was a huge contrast between Versace and Armani's pieces and Japanese designers ones. The first ones were perfectly cut and, talking about Versace, featured very elaborate prints unlike those from Yamamoto which were black or two-coloured. On the left side there were a Prada nylon waistcoat and jacket along with some Stone Island coats.

You could also find a little space on fashion books, but visitors could see a few more here and there.
-

The biggest room was dedicated to Romeo Gigli, the perfect union between West and East. On the right there was a black bridal dress for his daughter, in the middle there were some really representative outfits, and at the bottom there was a naif printed suit.

Finally, another little room at the end of the aisle, covered in Versace campaigns, hosted a 1990-1991 Versace minidress.

I really liked the exhibit. It was little, but featured gorgeous garments. I also love the fact that visitors were allowed to take pictures and take a closer look to the pieces. My favourite ones are this last dress, ad the cream-coloured Armani suit.
Did you visit this exhibit? Do you prefer Japanese or Italian designers? Which pieces do you like most?
-
